MIT Report: March 2010
By Melody Roper, Mar 1, 2010

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight” (Prov. 3:5, 6 NASB).

When our son, Glenn II, was about seven years old, we lived in Detroit, Michigan. We never had any major problems with our neighbors, but when we knew we would be away at night, we used to leave a light plugged into a timer so it wouldn’t be obvious we weren’t home. One day, Glenn II asked me why we did that. I told him the reason, and he said, “But Mommy, you and Daddy always say I should tell the truth. Isn’t it lying when you try to make people think you’re home when you’re not?”

As I thought about what he said, I had to agree with him. I discussed it with my husband, and we decided to no longer plug in our light timer. We lived there for several years after that, and no one ever broke into our house at night. It became a lesson for us that even though it seems to make sense to do something, it’s not always the best decision. We must trust and obey God no matter the circumstances.

On the surface, it doesn’t make sense to work with people whose lives are so intertwined with spirits, especially since we’ve had so little exposure to such a culture. A brother from my home church said he could never go to such a place and do what we will do. Honestly, I don’t think we would have ever thought to work with such a people group ourselves, but we’ve come to the conclusion that the safest and most rewarding place for us to go is where God wants us to be. How it’s going to work out is His business, not ours.

There’s nothing particularly special about us except that God called us to this place at this time, and we consented to go. Many of you are making it possible for us to go, and we are very grateful. We’re anxious to get to know the Tai-Kadai people of Southeast Asia and the missionary team already there. We can hardly wait to get to work. We covet your prayers and invite more of you to support our mission financially.
